She was the 9th of 10 children. Her mother died before Rhoda turned 2, and her father remarried just after Rhoda turned 4 years of age.

She was unfortunate to have been born at a time and place that made it difficult to be female, unmarried, spirited and poor while giving birth to three children. By the time her third child was born, Rhoda was institutionalized at the Madison County Farm outside Winterset, Iowa.

She had 3 children: Mabel, raised by the William Kivett family; George, who took his mother's maiden name; and Cora, adopted by the Kephart family of Barney IA and later married W.M. Hudson and in 1911 was living in Norwalk IA.

In 1900, per the Federal Census, she was living next door to daughter Cora (and son-in-law William Hudson) while boarding with Mary Kephart, the woman who had adopted Cora.. This was in Linn, Iowa (Warren County).

George took his mother from the Madison County Home and had her brought out to Montana around 1910. This arrangement did not last long, however, and she was soon committed to Clarinda Mental Hospital in Clarinda Iowa, where she lived her last few years and died on 15 Oct 1920.
