Combination Atlas Map of Tuscarawas Co, Ohio - page 92; On March 29, 1863, he (Oliver H Hoover) married Miss Anna Bell, daughter of Dr. John McElroy and Catherine Poe Emerson. Dr. John McElroy Emerson, born June 29, 1817 and died April 17, 1884, was the son of John and Isabella Thornton Emerson who started from Ireland when Dr. John McElroy was but twelve weeks old. They came to Patterson, New Jersey, then to Cleveland, and finally settled near Canal Dover. John Emerson was born May 1, 1789, and died April 21, 1838; Isabella Thornton, his wife, was born July 5, 1795, died in Illinois June 5, 1884 and is buried with him at Canal Dover. In 1819 the grandparents of Dr. John McElroy, came from Ireland and settled two miles south of New Philadelphia. They were named John Emerson, Sr., who died April 16, 1843, aged eighty-five years, and Jane Emerson who died February 10, 1841, aged seventy-five years. Dr. John McElroy Emerson practiced at Sloansville, Schoharie County, New York and is buried in Rosemond Cemetary, Christian County, Illinois. His wife, Catherine Poe of Massillon, was the daughter of Andrew Poe and of Anna Hoyt Poe who lived to be ninety-seven years old. Catherine Poe was the youngest sister of the noted Rev. Adam Poe and she was a second cousin of Edgar Allen Poe, the poet. Her father Andrew, was a son of Adam and a nephew of Andrew Poe, the celebrated Indian Fighters. The seven children of Oliver H., and Anna Bell Hoover died in infancy except Bessie who graduated from New Philadelphia High School and then from Keemar College, Hagerstown, Maryland near her grandfather Hoover's birthplace. On November 7, 1889, Bessie married Otto, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Myers Schweitzer. Their children are Oliver Hoover, Louis Samuel, Annabel, Elizabeth Francis, and William Edward.
