John was a blacksmith and fought in the War of 1812 serving under Col. Dyer (TN muster Roll, War 1812, vol 4 pg 57). Enlisted while the family lived in Dickson Co., TN. Some accounts have him returning to Dickson Co. and dying from his war wounds.
