Manning Carter, Jr., 78, of Winter Haven, Florida died October 30, 2014 of respiratory failure.

Manning was born November 5, 1935, in Clewiston, Florida, to Manning and Doris (Redish) Carter. After graduating from Clewiston High School he served in the U.S. Navy. He then earned degrees from the University of Florida and taught vocational agriculture in Polk County schools for 33 years. He started and owned Fox Hollow Nursery for 11 years. After his retirement he participated in a plant research study at Glacier National Park, traveled much of the U.S., including Alaska, by motor home, and enjoyed gardening, wood working, and fishing.

Manning is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kathleen, daughters: Susan Carter, Julia (Tom) Tofanelli, and Laura (James) Mallo, brothers: Wayne, Clyde, and Keith Carter, and sister, Kitty Egley, 5 grandchildren: Lauren, Lindsay, and Leah Tofanelli and Reagan and Carter Mallo, and 2 great-grandchildren.

A gathering for friends and family will be held on November 16th from 1-4 pm at the Winter Haven Garden Center.
