Alex passed away Saturday, November 1, 2014 at St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson.

Alex was born in Dickinson, ND on August 18, 1918 to Frank and Rose (Steckler) Hegel. He grew up on a farm south of Dickinson and took over the family farm in 1944. Alex married Magdalene Huschka at St. Mary’s in South Heart. To this union five daughters were born: Arlene, Judy, Marie, Ida, and Rosan. When Alex could no longer farm, the family moved to California for 12 years. After divorcing Magdalene, he met Ellen Triendal. Alex and Ellen were married in California on February 12, 1966. In the late 1960s, the couple moved back to Dickinson to take care of Alex’s parents. Alex and Ellen spent 45 wonderful years together before Ellen passed away in 2011.

Alex worked as a mechanic for Berger Electric for a number of years. When he retired, he took up repairing fishing rods in his home for over 38 years. Alex loved to fish. In California, he went deep sea fishing and the biggest fish he caught was 60 pounds. Alex fished with many of his friends in the Dickinson area, and they thought of him as a very kind man. Alex and Ellen loved pets, and had many dogs and birds over the years. He and Ellen loved to go to auction sales and garage sales, collecting knickknacks and clocks.

Alex moved into Evergreen after Ellen passed away, and lived there for almost three years. He moved into St. Benedicts in October of 2014.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Rose Hegel; wife, Ellen; daughters, Judy and Arlene; granddaughter, Sherie; sister, Veronica Barth; brother-in-laws, Leo Barth, Joe Maus and Mike Sticka; step-children, Bill Nelson, John Pebworth, Jack Nelson and Margie Klein.
