Convicted murderer. His last name was also spelled Clemmons, Clemans, or Clemens. He killed his wife and eight children in Clarksburg, Virginia on November 10, 1805 before fleeing into the woods. After a few days, he surrendered himself to the authorities and confessed to the crime. In court, he plead not guilty to all charges by reason of insanity, but was still sentenced to death and executed as the insanity defense was an unacceptable method of defense during that time.
