Early District Resident Dies

Robert John Kearns, 78, who was awarded the Meritorious Medal for his services in the First Great War with the 39th Field Battery of Lethbridge, died Sunday at his farm four miles north of Strathmore. Mr. Kearns came to the Strathmore district in 1910.

Mr. Kearns was born in Essex, England, and had served with the Imperial army for 21 years prior to coming to Alberta. He farmed four years and enlisted with the Lethbridge unit in 1914. He received his discharge in 1919 with the rank of regimental sergeant-major and returned to Strathmore. He farmed extensively in that district until retiring in 1937.

Surviving are his wife, Alice, of Strathmore; five daughters, Mrs. W.H. Hartell of Cheadle, Mrs. Gordon Sinclair, Mrs. Samuel Anderson, Mrs. D. Brook of Ardenode, Alberta, and Mrs. Milturn Hurd of Oklahoma; two sons, Gordon of Strathmore, and Robert of Calgary; 36 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
