Helen Catherine McDonnell, 94, life-long resident of Escanaba, passed away on a Saturday, at the Families Manor near the home of her son John.

She was was the daughter of Hans B. and Lydia (Petersen) Bonefeld. Helen attended school in Escanaba and was a member of the graduating Class of 1938.

She married John W. McDonnell in Escanaba and he preceded her in death on May 21, 1991.

Helen was a strong and loving woman with a deep dedication to her family and business, Bonefeld Furniture. She co-owned and managed the company at a time when women were not prominent in the business world. Helen was a gentle, kind woman who always put her family first. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and was able to meet her first great-grandchild this spring.

In her spare time, Helen enjoyed playing the game of Bridge and was an avid reader.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Escanaba, Elks Lodge 354 Lady Elk, Escanaba DDA, and General Federation of Women's Club.

She was survived by: daughter, Jane (Steve) Turner; son, John (Martha) McDonnell; grandchildren, Jennifer and Laurel; great-grandchild, Soren; many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to parents and her husband, John, she was preceded in death by: son, Tom; and brother, George Bonefeld.

Visitation at the First Presbyterian Church. Funeral services with Rev. Scott White officiating. Burial in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
