Knox D. and Elizabeth (twins), David T. and Fremont who married Susan Janette CALDWELL [daughter of Sarah Ann ( CREAGER ) and Rev. Capt. David S. CALDWELL].

Martha and John had at least three sons who died in the Civil War.

The 72nd OVI was organized in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio, from October through December, 1861. It left for Camp Chase on January 24, 1862, with 900 men. On Feburary 17, 1862, it was mustered in at Columbus, Ohio, and was ordered to Paducah, Kentucky, where it placed under the command of General William Tecumseh Sherman.

The regiment was assigned to a brigade under Colonel Ralph P. Buckland and boarded the steamer Baltic which disembarked them at Pittsburg Landing and later they encamped near Shiloh Church. On April 6 through the 7 it was constantly in the front lines of the battle named after this small edifice. This was its first major battle that the regiment was engaged in and the begining of a long history that would not end until it was mustered out on September 11, 1865, at Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Its losses were 60 in battle and 238 by disease.
