Harward, Theron 02/27/1920 ~ 10/05/2014 SAN DIEGO -- Theron Harward of San Diego, CA passed away October 5, 2014. He was 94. Theron was born in Aurora, Utah to Iva and Orson Harward. He was the second oldest of nine children and spent most of his young life in Provo, Utah, where his father went to work for a local dairy delivering milk to farms by horse and wagon. It was after Theron graduated from Provo High School that his life changed forever. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in November of 1940 and was sent to Camp Elliot in San Diego where he was stationed until war broke out in December of 1941. It was while Theron was home on leave as a young Sgt that he met the love of his life, Doris Bollinger. They were married June 1, 1944, after which he was immediately sent to Hawaii to train for landings in the Pacific as part of the newly formed 5th Marine Division. On Iwo Jima from Feb. 19th until March 28th, Theron went in with the 27th Marines, the second wave to hit the beach. He fought there until the island was secured, leading his platoon that suffered many casualties and receiving the Purple Heart for injuries sustained while fighting. Theron continued to serve in the Marine Corps for 20 years, serving in Korea from 1952-1955 and advancing to the rank of SgtMaj. He retired in 1960 and went on to serve for 20 more years at NASNI, San Diego as a Supervisory Industrial Engineer. For Theron, family was the center of his life. Theron and Doris spent many wonderful years together traveling the country, with a car full of camping gear and two small girls in tow, developing lasting friendships with fellow campers. His generous spirit and love of country were an inspiration to many. The beloved husband, father, "dada", brother, uncle and friend touched so many lives. He is survived by his two daughters, Linda Sunkel and Jeannette Lapota of San Diego, CA, son-in-law John Sunkel, granddaughter Deanna Kytonen (and husband Caleb Kytonen) of Tacoma, WA, great- granddaughter Clementine Kytonen, sisters Joyce Johnson and LaRae Davis, brothers Moyle, Verl and Darrell Harward, and many special nieces, nephews and friends. Theron, you are loved. We will miss your strength and your generosity. You will live on in our hearts forever.
