Robert C. Simkins was a decorated World War II Army medic in the South Pacific, earning a Bronze Star for heroism.
Additionally, he enlisted for several tours with the US Maritime Service (Merchant Marine) as a seaman, with the US Coast Guard as a seaman and with the Conservation Corp as a heavy equipment operator, all while still a young man.

He was 80 feet above ground, supervising the construction of the new Maricopa County office building, when a worker with an out-of-control wheelbarrow pushed him over the side of the half-completed structure.
