Almost a Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 6, 1864, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. E, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, but deserted to date September 12, 1864. He is in Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers as "Bellman" but is not found in the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file.
He married Rebecca Wagner January 10, 1865, and fathered Charles Vester (b. 02/02/66), George Andrew (b. 10/08/68), Elizabeth Alice (b. 12/01/70), Harvey Samuel (b. 06/18/73), Mary Catherine (b. 05/17/75), Daniel Edgar (b. 05/15/78), David Wagner (b. 03/19/80), and Cora Rebecca (b. 09/14/82 - married Elmer Samuel Ebright). Cause of his death is listed as "chronic nephritis" with "valvular lesion of heart" a contributing factor. His death certificate claims September 13 as his birthday.
