Mildred Adams Nixon, 92, of Bridle Brook Assisted Living, Mahomet, formerly of Farmer City, died peacefully at her home at Bridle Brook, Mahomet on Friday (Oct. 17, 2014).

She was born Jan. 13, 1922 to Emil and Verna (Amdor) Adams. Her elder sisters were Lois (Redding, Christie) and Geneva (Calhoun). They were raised on the Adams family farm in west Champaign County, where her grandparents had moved in the late 1870s.

Mick graduated from Fisher High School, where she was one of the first two Fisher cheerleaders, and attended Illinois Commercial College in Champaign. Mick lived in Bloomington, where she was employed at State Farm Insurance. She became one of the first female insurance underwriters when many men were called to World War II.

Mick and Thomas Vernon Nixon married at the Lutheran Church in Osman on June 1, 1946. Vernon and Mick farmed the Nixon family farm southwest of Farmer City for over three decades with Vernon's twin brother, Vernelle, and his wife Bernadine. Mick was an active participant in the farming operations, driving tractors and trucks and taking many home-cooked meals to the men in the fields.

Mick and Vernon's son, Thomas Emil Nixon, was raised in Farmer City and graduated from the University of Illinois. He lives in Gaithersburg, Md., and practices law in Washington, D.C.

Mick and Vernon enjoyed the company of their Adams and Nixon extended families and were active in the Farmer City community and the Fullerton Presbyterian Church. They golfed, bowled and belonged to a variety of card clubs over many years.

In midlife, they began ballroom dancing, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Mick was a local election polling place judge and a county zoning board member. She volunteered at the local nursing home and provided many acts of kindness to neighbors, friends and family.

For about 30 years, Mick and Vernon spent winters in Florida, where they were active in shuffleboard and other community activities. In 2010, Mick and Vernon moved from their Farmer City home to Bridle Brook Assisted Living in Mahomet, where they became active members of that community. Blessed to have attentive care in her last months, she remained positively engaged in her world.
