Enlisted on 4/18/1861 at Berryville, VA. for 12 months' service, he was mustered into (1st) Company D, 1st Virginia Cavalry as a Private. On 9/15/1861 this Company was transferred into the 6th Virginia Cavalry as Company D.
Horse died 5/14/1861 of disease contracted in service; paid $135.
Reenlisted 2/8/1862 at Camp G.W. Smith for 2 years' service or the duration of the war.
Acting Lieutenant of Artillery 12/24/1862.
Promoted 2/7/1863 to Lieutenant, Ordnance Officer; assigned to (Infantry) General Edward Lloyd Thomas 2/18/1863.
Lieutenant, Ordnance Officer assigned to (Calvary) General Lomax 12/1863.
Lieutenant, Ordnance Officer assigned to (Calvary) General Payne.
Paroled 5/1/1865 at Summit Point, VA.

Postwar, he attended University of Virginia 1867-68. Later, he was a teacher in Alexandria, VA. prior to becoming the Principal of the Potomac Academy there.

The 6th Cavalry Regiment completed its organization in November, 1861, at Manassas, Virginia. Men of this unit were raised in Loudoun, Rappahannock, Clarke, Rockingham, Pittsylvania, Fairfax, Halifax, Fauquier, and Orange counties.

Place of death per regimental history. A newspaper in Charlottesville at time of death says he died at home of sister-in-law in Charlottesville.
