George Batts Coke was born in Texas and not Louisiana. There is some confusion because some census have recorded it as Louisiana. He was born just after the surrender of Vicksburg which occurred on July 4, 1863. From December of 1862 on, northeast Louisiana was being overrun by Union forces. George's father was serving with the 4th LA Calvary. In all likelihood, Malinda went to Texas to escape the hostilities as did many other families of Carroll Parrish. The plight of one of William W and Malinda Coke's very close neighbors is chronicled in the Brokenburn: The Journal of Kate Stone. Kate Stone's brother James Armstrong Stone also served with the 4th LA, Calvary. In March of 1863 the widow Stone and family left their home a few miles from the Coke home and went to Texas for the next two and a half years.
