FAIRFIELD--Letha M. Altman-Heston, 99, Nelson Nursing Home, Fairfield died 2:12 p.m. July 1, 1998, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.
She was born April 14, 1899, in What Cheer to Clarence and Iva Pence McMullen. She married Z. Vane Altman on August 6, 1919, in Ollie. He died Jan. 7, 1975. She then married Sylman Heston on December 31, 1976, in Fairfield. He died Feb. 28, 1986.
She had lived all her life in the Fairfield area. She started teaching in a one-room school house at age 14 in Iowa. She taught for three years and then married. She then started teaching again in 1949, she taught for 21 years and retired from full-time teaching at the age of 65; and continued as a substitute teacher for seven more years. She was a member of First Christian Church in Fairfield. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Retired Teachers, Sew n' Sew Club and Christian Women Fellowship of Fairfield.
She is survived by a son, Kenneth Leon of Altman, Calif.; a daughter, Phyllis Lee Hall, Temple City, Calif.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sister, Leona Baker of Ames.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Frances Pirtle; two sisters, Lillian Toyne and Ruth Shearer; and a brother, Glen McMullen.
The service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Behner Funeral Home, the Rev. Robert Gates officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will begin Sunday morning with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Fairfield.
Memorials may be made to First Christian Church or American Cancer Society.
