Lee Crotinger, age 81, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Methodist Medical Center. She was born and raised in Bad Wildungen, Germany, where she met her husband of 55 years, Howard, who preceded her in death in 2007.
Lee and Howard, whose career was in the Foreign Service of the U.S. State Department, were married in an 800-year-old church in her home town. Lee was certified by the Foreign Services Institute of the State Department as a German instructor and later in English as a second language. She accompanied her husband to foreign service posts in Vienna, Austria; Kobe and Yokohama, Japan; Bangkok, Thailand; Sydney, Australia; and in several Washington, D.C. assignments.
Lee is survived by her daughter, Susan, of Connecticut; and sister, Friedel; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many cousins in Germany.
The Crotingers settled in Oak Ridge in 1975. Lee took the job of Executive Director of the YWCA. Later, she became a Realtor and remained with Realty 100, Inc. until her retirement.
She was a long-time member of Altrusa and an active member of First United Methodist Church. Lee served on the Curriculum Committee of the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning (ORICL), where she also taught conversational German.
She always contributed generously to many volunteer activities. Her great passion was the sport of tennis, which she played several times a week until recently. Lee loved Oak Ridge very much and promoted her city in many endeavors.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on April 29, 2008, at First United Methodist Church. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the First United Methodist Church, Oak Ridge Animal Shelter, or the American Red Cross
