Ira was the seventh of nine children born to Frederick Simon Van Petten and Sarah Bartlett. He was baptized 25 Sep 1817, at the Woestina Dutch Reformed Church, Rotterdam Junction, NY.
At the age of 18 he married Sarah A. Bell at the First Presbyterian Church of Schenectady, on 20 Sep 1835. Together they had eight children:
