Mr. Abney was born in Beatrice, and moved as a young child to Fairhope, where he grew up.
After serving in the Army in Germany at the conclusion of WWII, he returned home and enrolled at Auburn University where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees of fine art.
After graduation, Mr. Abney remained at Auburn as a professor of fine art for 38 years.
In addition to instructing in the Art Department, he was commissioned to produce many sculptures and paintings for several businesses and organizations in Alabama and Georgia.
Mr. Abney was an active member of the VFW, the Elks Club and several genealogical societies.
He had varied interests, and pursued hobbies in areas such as music, faceting gems and history.
Mr. Abney was preceded in death by his parents, sister, and his wife, Jackie Abney.
He is survived by his sons, Louis Abney II and Chris (Young) Abney; his daughters, Mimi (Andy) Glantz and Kathy Abney; his grandchildren, Melissa and Michael Glantz, James and Tina Abney, and Allie and Chloe Abney; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at 11 a.m., at Colony Cemetery in Fairhope.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate the lives of Louis and Jackie Abney following the service at Away By the Bay.
