Grandad Clark ran a boat on the Red River from New Orleans to Grand Ecore. He would bring supplies there then load the ox wagons to be delivered to several stores or to individuals. Then he gathered people’s cotton and shipped it back to New Orleans. He set up two or three country stores. One was called the White Store and was at the place now called Robeline. When the Civil War broke out, his loyal slaves stuck with them. He would haul his merchandise out someplace then he would take his wagons apart, bringing a piece back at a time and put them together. A.V. Clark.

“Pleasant Hill in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana in 1842 was just that, pleasant. Elijah Clark and Sophie Sheets, his wife, had become the plantation type of people. Their plantation was worked by their slaves, who were numerous like the acres comprising the plantation.
