Leonard Raymond Vande Lune was born Sept. 21, 1925, near Monroe to William and Lena Vander Wiel Vande Lune. He attended country grade school near Prairie City. He began farming with his father and brother, Wilbert.

On April 20, 1950, he married Janella Kole. They had one daughter, Sandra Kay, born Oct. 14, 1955. Janella died Oct. 18, 1955. On Jan. 11, 1957, Leonard married Esther De Jong at Trinity Reformed Church in Pella. They had two daughters: Cynthia Lee and Lori Ann. They farmed east of Pella and moved to Monroe in 1965. In December 1968, they moved to a farm near Otley and began a dairy farm. Leonard enjoyed farming, his dairy herd and raising hogs.

In 1985, he underwent a laryngectomy after being diagnosed with cancer. They sold the dairy herd in 1988. They continued living on the farm until 1995, when they moved into Pella. They then read meters for the Rural Electric Cooperative, and Leonard also mowed lawns. He spoke at area high schools and in other venues on the effects of smoking, and was active with the Red Rock New Voice Club.

Leonard, 77, of Pella, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 at his home.

He is survived by his wife, Esther; three daughters and sons-in-law: Sandy K. and Fred Van Den Broek of Otley, Cindy L. and Gary Moffet of Otley, and Lori A. and Tom Thompson of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; eight grandchildren; two sisters and a brother and spouses: Frances Van Haaften, Marvin and Mary Lou Vande Lune, and Shirley and Joe Schutte, and another sister-in-law, Genevieve (Wilbert) Vande Lune, all of Pella; Esther's siblings: Nina De Jong, Mabel (Russell) Van Arkel, Grace (Peter) De Hamer, Ada De Jong, Charlotte De Jong, all of Pella, and Gilbert and Dorothy De Jong of Leighton.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janella; his parents; an infant brother in 1929; two sisters: Gertrude (Gert) Van Dyke and Ruth (Merle) Kallemyn; and a brother, Wilbert G. Vande Lune.
