Mary Isabelle (Kinney) Devine was born on March 29, 1902 to Thomas Francis and Mary Josephine (Ryan) Kinney. Mary lived with her parents on a farm where her father was a tenant farmer. She attended Pleasant Hill Grade School. Mary made her First Communion on June 15, 1911 at St Luke's Catholic Church. She was a very pretty girl and was an excellent piano player and so talented that she gave lessons. Mary graduated in 1920 from the Ursuline Convent School in Springfield, Illinois.
She married William Harry Devine on November 7, 1925 in St. Luke's Catholic Church with Rev Joseph O'Dwyer officiating. Witnesses were Thomas Finn and Mary J. Devlin. Mary and Bill moved to Ashland and had seven precious children born to them, six surviving, Mary, Frank, John, Rose, James, and June in Ashland, Illinois. She became very ill and was taken to Our Savior's Hospital in Jacksonville where she passed away on June 18, 1935. Funeral services were held on Friday morning at 9 A.M. at St. Augustine's Church in Ashland. She is buried near her father Thomas, baby brother Fletcher, and grandfather James F. Ryan in Walnut Ridge Cemetery, their graves surrounded by four K's.
She is survived by her husband Bill, children Mary, Frank, Johnny, Rose, James, and June, parents Thomas and Mollie Kinney, aunts Catherine (Kinney) Steuernagle, Ellen (Devine) Kinney, Sarah (Ryan) Daly, and Catherine Ryan, uncle Daniel Kinney, cousins Marguerite (Kinney) Schneider, Lawrence Kinney, Helen (Daly) Lunden, Patrick and John Daly, Catherine, Bernadine, and Frank Collins, Rose (Kinney) Lerch, John B. Kinney, and Mary (Kinney) Collins.
She was preceded in death by her brother Fletcher, grandparents James and Sarah (Loughry) Ryan and John and Isabella (McKillip) Kinney, aunt Rosana Kinney, uncles Patrick, John, and Michael Kinney, and cousin Rose (Kinney) Greuel.
