On Tuesday, September 16, 2014, God called his good and faithful servant, Estella Hargis Black, to abide with Him in His heavenly home. Although her earthly life is finished, she lives on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

Estella Hargis Black was the seventh of eight children born to Willie and Maggie Perry Hargis in Manchaca, Texas. At age 97, she was the last surviving child. She had a delightful childhood with her siblings and was always proud to be known as the "baby girl." If she could speak today, she would gladly tell you that she grew up in a Christian home where God was first and there was no shortage of love. Hence, she committed her life to Christ at a very early age.

Educated in Manchaca, Texas and L. C. Anderson High School in Austin, she valued education and eventually became a licensed cosmetologist after marrying and giving birth to one daughter Johnnie M. Coleman Overton and one son, George Coleman, Jr. Her love of cooking led her to a second career as a superb pastry chef at American National Bank, from which she retired in 1974. Both husbands, George Coleman, Sr. and Ventry Keats Black preceded her in death as well as four brothers: Odean, Otis, Chatam, and Willie, Jr.; sisters, Corine Hargis, Lonie Taylor, and Bertha Black; son, George Coleman, Jr.

Estella was an active member of Rising Star Baptist Church for 80 years and, at the time of her passing, was the oldest and longest tenured member. She served the church as a member of the choir, president and vice president of Mission II, Sunshine chair, Sunday School teacher for the women's class; served with the Deacon's Wives and prepared communion bread from 1990 – 2014, a period of 24 years. She was an active participant in the St. John Regular Baptist Association and for many years served as treasurer of B.L.H. Mission II Women's Convention. On July 25, 2013, she was recognized for her years of service as treasurer. At the time of her passing she was chair of E. F. (Eleanor Faye) Sims Benevolent Conference. In addition, she was a lifetime member of I. A. Craig #17 Order of the Eastern Star.

Never reluctant to say what was on her mind, Estella would quickly tell you that it was God's grace and mercy that allowed her to remain on His created earth long enough to share her love with three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives. She looked forward to the annual Sayles-Hargis Family Reunion and believed that the love of family could not be beat. Reading her Bible daily, cooking, gardening, and going places as often as she could brought her joy. Estella received much pleasure from sharing her time and resources to make others happy. This was demonstrated by her show of love for children, the care she provided during her father's illness and her outstanding devotion while caring for her son, George Coleman, Jr. for 39 years. She knew that God was her refuge and strength, and she strived daily to live her life so that it would be pleasing in His sight.

Survivors include daughter, Johnnie M. Overton (Roscoe); three grandchildren, Rutherford (Angela) Overton, Nashville, TN, Roscoe Overton, Jr. (Connie), Houston, TX, Marva Estelle Overton, Austin, TX; five great grandchildren, Lauren, Lawrence, Jordan, Kristin, Kaila Overton; sister-in-law, Gertha Hargis; three nieces, Bertha Williams, Austin, TX, Brenda Wilburn, Brownsville, TX, Diane (Darrell) Sanders, Giddings, TX; two nephews, Reginald Hargis, Atlanta, GA, Michael Hargis (Rosalind), Austin, TX; numerous great nephews and nieces, cousins and loving friends including a devoted family friend Mr. Earlee Bunton
