He was born in England in 1829-Came to America when Eighteen and to Chehalis County in 1863
Sunday night last Richard Arland died at his home east of Montesano-one of the last of the early poineers of this county. When he was eighteen years of age his parents removed to Cross Plains, Dane county, Wisconsin. He was married to Sarah E. Goodwin, Jan. 19, 1856. Of this union eight children were born, six of whom are now living. They are; James, Charles and George Arland, Mrs. Newton Gilkey and Miss Etta Arland of Montesano; Mrs. Jesse Gilkey of eastern Washington, Mr. Arland came to Chehalis county in 1863, taking a homestead one mile east of Montesano, where he resided the remainder of his life.
Mr. Arland being a public spirited citizen took interest in everything that contributed to the general good of the community. Travel in the early days was by water. Mr. Arland was instrumental in planning and securing our first county raod, and the lasting obligation of the people due him.
The last dozen years Mr. Arland has been a great sufferer, never having any rest during his waking hours, but withal he was exceedingly patient and never murmured. He retained consciousness to the last, speaking to his wife and children until his voice was still in death. Mrs. Arland and ot her surviving relatives have the profound sympathy of a host of friends.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church by the Rev. Dr. Flesher, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Hutton.
The decoration of the church was beautiful, such a profussion fo flowers indicating the deserved tribute of a large congregation of weeping friends.
The interment took place in the beautiful hillside cemetery in this city, where he shall rest until reveille shall sound the note of mortality being swallowed up of life.
