ELOY — Coy Gene Amerson, 83, a retired Eloy fire chief, died on July 28, 2014, at home.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at J. Warren Funeral Services, Valley Chapel.

Mr. Amerson was born on July 9, 1931, in Tulia, Texas, and was a son of Floyd O. and Amanda J. Amerson. He served as a volunteer firefighter for the Eloy Fire District from 1954 until retiring in 1979 and was fire chief some of that time. He was a mechanic and worked with his brother J.C. at Valley Auto Parts for many years. During that time they raced cars and at one time had the No. 1 Jalopy in the state. He enjoyed racing and fishing and loved his grandchildren and his animals.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Gloria Ann; a son, Coy L. Amerson of Eloy; a daughter, Manda J. Madewell of Eloy; a sister, Erdeane Morgan of Houston; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Hollis L., J.C. and Don L. Amerson, and five sisters, Laverne Cagle, Vesta E. Stringer, Verdia Mae Elkins, Lavenia M. Williams and Truda D. Amerson.
