It is doubtful whether any surviving Roman was a resident of this City when Andrew Vredenburg, then six years old, came to this place. Mr. Vredenburg was born at Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, June 25, 1799, and died in this City on Thursday last, aged 76 years, 3 months and 24 days. As has been said, he was brought to this City in early boyhood. He was twice married. His first wife was the sister of the late Rev. Albert Barnes. His second wife was the sister of Daniel Dopp. He had seven children, three boys and four girls. One son and one daughter died in childhood. The five surviving sons and daughters, Henry D. and Albert B. Vredenburg, Mrs. W.D. Reese and Mrs. H.W. Tibbitts of Rome, and Mrs. J.L. Stone of Vernon. Deceased had a shock of palsy about two years since, and has been ill most of the time since. The Immediate cause of death was dropsy. During a long and useful life Mr. Vredenburg won the respect and love of all with whom he came in contact. He was called on to serve on earth longer than most men are called to serve. It was given him to perform every task as few men perform them. It does not often happen that mourning friends are permitted to look over the life record of one gone, to find it so completely filled as was the life record of Mr. Vredenburg. His funeral occurred from his late residence near Wright's settlement, and was largely
attended by friends from Rome and surrounding towns. The remains were committed to earth in the Wright's Settlement burying ground.
