The son of Adam & Sarah (Strasbaugh) Carbaugh, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes. He married Mary Magdalena Freet November 26, 1861, and fathered the children you see linked below).

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Chambersburg July 11, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 16 as a private with Co. D in the six-month organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company February 20, 1864.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four in Chambersburg February 25, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 1 as a private with the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. A, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

A policeman during some of his post-war years, he died at his home from "tuberculosis of larynx" with "disability of age" a contributing factor.
