Major League Baseball Player. When the third baseman made his debut with the Detroit Tigers in 1920, he led the American League with 17 pinch hits in 52-at bats and hit a respectable .293. He didn't stick. Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack acquired him from Portland of the Pacific Coast League, and Hale played the next seven seasons (1923-29) with the A's. In 1925, the right-handed batter hit .345 with 30 doubles and 11 triples. He batted .313 in 1927 and .309 in 88 games the following year. He was traded on Dec. 11, 1929 to the St. Louis Browns for catcher Wally Schang and hit .274 in 62 games for them in his final season. His lifetime batting average for 10 years was .302.
