John Gaddis Baily, 67 years, of Carmichaels, prominent dairy farmer and political leader, died Wednesday night, October 5, 1960 in Greene County Memorial Hospital. He had been critically ill for a week and had been in failing health for a year. Mr. Baily was a son of George Ellsworth Baily and Maggie Lynch Baily and was born May 8, 1893 at Carmichaels. He was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University. On December 12, 1922 Mr. Baily was united in marriage with Nellie Hathaway. He was a prominent Republican leader in Greene County and for two four-year terms (1947-55) he was minority member of the Greene County board of commissioners. Last year he was elected to his second term as a Greene County auditor. Mr. Baily had also served six years as a director of the Greene County Board of Public Assistance. He was closely associated with a number of agricultural organizations and projects. For 12 years he was vice chairman of the county committee of the US Soil Conservation Service, a long-standing member of the Carmichaels Grange and was a director of the Greene County Farm Bureau Cooperative. Mr. Baily had also served 10 years as a member of Cumberland Township School Board. He was a past president (1956) of the Carmichaels Rotary Club, and a member of Waynesburg Elks No. 757. In past years he was also affiliated with the Carmichaels Odd Fellows Lodge and the Waynesburg Moose Lodge. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carmichaels. Surviving are his wife; his step-mother, Mrs. Jennie M Baily of Pittsburgh; three daughters, Jean, wife of James A Rockwell of Buffalo, NY; Doris, wife of Leonard Orban of Cleveland; and Virginia Lee, wife of Don Lough of Carmichaels; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Baily of Los Angeles, Calif and Paul L Baily of Carmichaels; one sister, Miss Harriette Baily of Waynesburg; one step-sister, Mrs. Grace Beeman of Pittsburgh, and one step-brother, James Ellis Baily of Pittsburgh. One son, John, and a sister are deceased. Funeral services were held Saturday in the Michael Lucas Funeral Home, conducted by Rev Russell Owens. Interment in Laurel Point Cemetery.
