Mr. Hoyt L. Chitwood, 94, of Cunningham Drive, Hartwell, died Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Hart Care Center.
Born on September 13, 1920 in Lavonia GA, he was the son of the late Lonnie A. Chitwood and Myrtie Maybelle Foster Chitwood.
Mr. Chitwood was formerly employed at Newton Mill and retired from Dunlop Sports, where he was a mechanic and electrician. He was retired owner & operator of Chitwood Hobby Shop, a member of the Mt. Olivet Church of God and a WW II U.S. Navy veteran, where he served as a troop/cargo ship gunner in the Atlantic Theater.
Survivors include his three sons: Thomas Chitwood & his wife Brenda, Joe Chitwood & his wife Peggy, and Ronnie Chitwood & his wife Barbara all of Hartwell; three daughters: Winona Evans & her husband Jack of Winterville GA, Polly Cordell & her husband Tom and Peggy Skelton both of Hartwell; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Chitwood was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 76 years, Eloise Duck Chitwood; a son, Echota Chitwood; a grandchild, Lisa Cordell; two brothers: Lon Chitwood and O’Neal Chitwood and two sisters: Eve Addison and Reba Nell Fuller.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell with Rev. Jerry Chitwood and Rev. Gary Ledford officiating. Burial in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.
The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday evening. The family is at the home of Joe & Peggy Chitwood, 246 Fred King Road, Hartwell.
