The outfielder made his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1942, but before he entered the military in 1944, he was sent to the St. Louis Cardinals' Columbus farm club with cash for pitcher Preacher Roe. Upon his return in 1946, he and pitcher Al Jurisich were sold to the Philadelphia Phillies. The left-handed batter hit .281 with 30 doubles in 1946 and .273 in 1947. Wyrostek was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for shortstop Eddie Miller on Feb. 10, 1948. He belted a career-high 17 homers in 1948 and batted .311 in 1951. He played in the 1950 and 1951 All-Star Games, going hitless in three at-bats. He drove in eight runs on September 4, 1950 in a 5-4 and 8-4 doubleheader sweep over St. Louis at Crosley Field. He was dealt to the Phillies with pitcher Kent Peterson on May 23, 1952 for pitcher Bubba Church. His 11-year totals were .271 with 1,149 hits, including 209 doubles.
