Robert B. (Bob) Hartman, 90, of Roanoke, departed this earthly life Sunday, September 7, 2014.

Bob was born June 1, 1924, to M. Louise Kent and Robert Luther Hartman. Sisters and brothers preceding him include Francis Eanes, Retha Hartman, Edna Hartman, Pauline Frances and Elizabeth Haynes; Paul Hartman, Newton Hartman and Ulmont Hartman.

Bob graduated early from Jefferson High School in 1942 leaving for U.S. Army basic training and then on to Fort Sheridan, Illinois, where he was assigned to the 397 AAA Battalion. Bob and his three brothers served their country during WW II. He was part of the D-Day Invasion at Normandy Beach on June 6, 1944. Over the next year his unit participated in military action across the European Theater through France, Belgium, Holland, including the Battle of the Bulge, and Germany, receiving unit citations along the way.

Upon Bob’s return home to Roanoke in 1945 he attended National Business College and married his fiancée, Mary Virginia Housman. Bob was employed by C & P Telephone Company for 37 years and was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church participating in the adult choir for over twenty years. Bob was a 40 year member of Slate River Hunt club, an avid gardener and loved fishing the Outer banks of North Carolina where he will be missed on the pier. Other accomplishments include 68 years as a member of Williamson Road Masonic Lodge where he served as master and Lodge Chaplain.

Surviving family members include two daughters, Janet H. Natt and Betty Hartman Jones (husband, Tim); twin grandsons, Andrew Logan Jones and Matthew Hartman Jones; one sister-in-law, Mildred H. Scott; and one brother-in-law, Stephen M. Francis all of Roanoke. Bob was blessed to have numerous nieces and nephews with whom he enjoyed spending time; and many extended family friends from C & P and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Special thanks to the residents and staff members of Virginia Veterans Care Center, second floor, west wing for their friendship, love and care during Bob’s final months.

Visitation will be conducted on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey’s North Chapel. The funeral service will be conducted by Pastor James Armentrout at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1008 Franklin Road SW at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 10, 2014. The interment will follow in Blue Ridge memorial Gardens with Masonic Rites and Military Honors. At Bob’s request in lieu of flowers please make contributions to the Garden Fund at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
