Montrose -- Longtime Montrose resident and businessman, Paul "Jake" Holzmeister, age 84, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 6, 2003, following a short stay at the Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose.

Paul Holzmeister was born in Delta, Colo., on Nov. 8, 1918, the son of Jacob and Anna (Prediger) Holzmeister.

He spent his childhood and attended school through the eighth grade in Olathe. Jake then joined his family in farming in the Olathe / Montrose area.

On Dec. 31, 1942, Jake was united in marriage with the love of his life, Georgia Long, in Montrose, Colo., where they established their home.

Jake and Georgia had the joy and privilege of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this past year. In 1946 Jake purchased a coal company and ran the company until 1962. In 1947 he began a trucking company, along with running the coal company, and hauled supplies to the mills in Durango and Naturita until 1964. Prior to his retirement in the 1970s, Jake worked in the uranium mining industry.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Montrose. Jake loved to tell stories, especially when his friends stopped by the house to visit. He loved when he traveled to see his son, Rich and the grandchildren, while making a summer trip to California. Joe loved to play cards on Saturday nights when they would have card parties at the house. He also loved to tinker with mechanics, fish, and help the local contractors with mechanics, truck driving or anything they needed.

Surviving family members who were honored to share Jake's life include his beloved wife, Georgia Holzmeister, of Montrose, Colo.; one son, Richard Holzmeister and wife Sandi, of Elverta, Calif.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Other family survivors include four sisters: Katie Suppes, Rose Johnson and Ann Distel, all of Montrose, Colo.; and Regina Fischer, of Gallup, N.M.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Casper, John and Pete Holzmeister; and three sisters: Margerite Dukart, Mary Distel and Florence Aldrich.

A Funeral Mass in celebration of Jake's life will be officiated by Msgr. Dan Huber Thursday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Montrose. Rite of Committal will follow in the Valley Lawns Cemetery, south of Montrose.
