Randolph native Bernard L. Carleton dies in Florida at 89
Bernard Lyon "Barney" Carleton, 89, formerly of 4390 N. Pine Drive, Hernando, Fla. and 2884 Bentley Avenue, Jamestown, died at 7:01 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, in Hernando.
A Florida resident the past 27 years, he was born April 20, 1908, in Randolph, a son of Earl and Bernice Lyon Carlson.
Mr. Carleton was an associate mechanical engineer for Sylvania Electric Co. for 23 years, retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Power Boat Club and was a hydroplane boat racer for many years. He had also been an avid amateur radio operator since 1921.
He is survived by a daughter, Jean L. Holton of Jamestown; three sons: David L. Carleton of Los Angeles; Paul H. Carleton of Cleveland; and John B. Carleton, of Okinawa, Japan; and twelve grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Johnson; and two brothers, Herman and Lawrence Carlson.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date with burial in the Steamburg Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Fluvanna Community Church.
