Bernice L. Carlson
Mrs. Bernice L. Carlson, 81, of South Maple Street, Ashville, died at 9:30 a.m. yesterday (Jan. 8, 1965).
She was born March 14, 1883, in Steamburg, N.Y., the daughter of Herman A. and Ada E. Wells Lyon. She attended Chamberlin Institute and graduated from Ellington Teachers Training Class in 1904.
Mrs. Carlson taught school in Niobe. She was tax collector for the Town of Harmony for 25 years retiring in 1957. She had been an active member of the Watts Flats Methodist Church; the WSCS of the church; and the South Harmony Grange.
Mrs. Carlson was a faithful church member and one who devoted all her life to her family whom she cared for alone for many years. Her hobby was crocheting, and she made many afghans which she gave to others.
She lived in Watts Flats for 50 years. Since leaving in 1957 she had resided with her daughter, Mrs. Earl C. (Evelyn) Johnson, Bonita Lane, Jamestown; and her son, Lawrence A. Carlson, of Ashville, where she died.
Survivors in addition to Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Carlson, include: two sons, Bernard L. Carleton, of Jamestown; and Herman E. Carlson, of Jacksonville, Fla.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Powers Funeral Home. The Rev. Wayne B. Price, pastor of the Albion, Pa., Methodist Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in Steamburg Cemetery. Friends will be received by the family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
