Mr. Bailey died Thursday, Sept. 4, at a Temple hospice facility.
He was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Wells to Burgin Orachie and Maurine Cox Bailey. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps in the Pacific during World War II. He married Nelda Cox on July 15, 1945, in Belton. They lived in Temple and Bartlett, where he was a car salesman before his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW, serving as commander of American Legion Post No. 183 in Barlett, and was a current member of American Legion Post No. 133 in Temple. He also was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 80 in Holland. He served as president of the Barlett ISD school board in the 1970s. He was secretary of the Temple Men's Bowling League for many years. He was a member of Oak Park United Methodist Church in Temple. He was preceded in death by a great-grandchild.
Survivors include his wife of Temple; a son, Donald Bailey of Temple; two daughters, Janice Wentrcek of Belton and Joyce Steglich of Temple; two brothers, Grady Bailey and Robert Bailey, both of Belton; two sisters, Lydia Baise of Terrell and Margaret Allsup of Waco; eight grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Oak Park United Methodist Church, 5505 S. 31st St., Temple, TX 76502, or any charity.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
