JOHN HACKNEY was born in Johnson County, Missouri, September 10, 1839. He was a 22-year-old blacksmith when he enlisted at San Francisco as a farrier September 25, 1861, and mustered into Company C, 2d California Cavalry. His regiment was deployed to guard and keep open immigrant trails, and was engaged in various skirmishes with Indians, principally Modocs and Piutes. John was honorably discharged from service at the Presidio of San Francisco October 13, 1864. After the war he settled at San Bernardino where he was a member of W. R. Cornman Post, No. 57, Grand Army of the Republic, in 1886.
