He died from an old gun shot wound to his right lung. William received this wound at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1863. William was part of the 33rd Virginia Infantry.

William never married. He was only 25 when he died.

He is most likely buried in an unmarked grave on the family farm near Honeyville, Page County, Virginia.
