Ben was killed in a knife fight at a dance in Montague County, Texas by Walter Culverhouse who had made some remarks about Ben's sister Maude that Ben did not like. It has been passed down that William and Susan never forgave the other children for Ben's death. He was the youngest boy and they felt like the older ones should have been looking after him. When his father Bill died, they buried Bill next to Ben at the Salona Cemetery in Montague County.
All of the boys played instruments and all were playing at the dance the night Ben was killed.
No pictures of Ben or his headstone is available.
