Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island. Lawrence attended and graduated from Columbia College in 1818, and afterwards began to study law in Connecticut. He passed the bar in 1821, but before beginning his law career he traveled to Europe with his new wife for an extended vacation. After traveling in Europe for almost two years he returned to New York to open his law practice.

His wife was the daughter of Archibald Gracie, a Scottish-born shipping magnate and early American businessman and merchant in New York City and Virginia, whose spacious home, Gracie Mansion, is now owned by the City of New York and serves as the official residence for each Mayor of New York City.
