Enlisted on 12 August 1861 at Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan, he was residing at Coldwater prior to his enlistment at 23 years of age; mustered in at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on 13 September 1861, Company B, Illinois 44th Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Northwestern Rifles) as a Corporal; counted as a casualty and hospitalized on 15 October 1861 at Warsaw, Benton County, Missouri; mustered out on 3 February 1862 with a disability discharge; enlisted for additional service on 1 June 1862 at Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan; mustered in on 19 August 1862, Company H, Michigan 17th Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a 1st Sergeant; discharged to accept a promotion on 10 August 1863; commissioned 2nd Lieutenant and transferred on 1 July 1863, Company I; commissioned 1st Lieutenant on 19 October 1863; killed in action (shell wound to chest and lungs) on 20 November 1863 during the Siege of Knoxville at Knox County, Tennessee.

The Illinois 44th Infantry documents report his status with them as "dropped as deserter on muster rolls of Feb to Apr 1863".
