Richard is the third child of Kenneth Otto Cowan and Dorothy Frances Chaney Cowan. On June 28, 1986 Richard was on a boat, when he had an accident. From that date on he was a quadraplegic. Even though his body was weak his mind was strong. He developed a wheel chair that could go off road, on road and do so much more than a regular wheel chair could do.

He loved to watch NASCAR races and was a fan of Richard Petty.

He is survived by his son Nicholas Cowan and his grandson Aldrin Cowan. He is also survived by his brothers, Kenneth, Gary and Mike and sister Linda. He was predeceased by a daughter, Bobbie Jo Cowan and his parents.
