John, my great-grandfather, was the son of William Caskey Hilts (1814-1885) and Eliza Drake (1814-1896).

William and Eliza six other children: Samuel J. (1837-1909), Thomas K. (1839-1843), Martha Adaline (1841-1930), William Theodore (1848-1920), Charles (1853-1874), Philip George (1859-1935).

John married Mary Adaline McWilliams (1856-1925) on Dec. 2, 1882.

Mary and John had three children: Laura E. (1883-1974), Ida Mae (1885-1961), and Edson Wilbert (1891-1972).

He enlisted as a Private on September 3, 1862. He mustered in on September 19, 1862 in Company 'C', 27th Regiment New Jersey Volunteers. John was discharged at U.S. Army General Hospital, Washington, DC, on March 10, 1863 with a disability.

The original cemetery deed was dated June 1, 1892 and was later transferred to Bullerjohn. John's granddaughter Edna Perry Bullerjohn (1906-1985) is buried next to John and Mary.
