Donna M. Mathews passed away on August 26th, 2014, peacefully at home within the comforting presence of family.

Donna was born January 28, 1928, the third child of Angus R. MacRae and Hazel Reed MacRae. She attended the Paul Idaho schools, and the University of Idaho, making life long friendships with her Alpha Phi sorority sisters.

On December 27, 1951, Donna married William L. (Bill) Mathews. Throughout Bill's career with the Bureau of Land Management, they resided in: Burley, Idaho; Madison, Wisconsin; Boise, Idaho; Falls Church, Virginia; returning home to Boise where they eventually retired.

Donna was an active member of Hillview United Methodist Church, where, among other things, she was a youth group leader for years. There are many fond memories of those days kept in her charges' hearts, as decades later they would recount the tales to her whenever they encountered her out and about.

Along with her support of youth activities, Donna participated in Job's Daughters, and was probably the best Girl Scout Leader of all time, although she would not admit it. She had a long affiliation with P.E.O., Idaho Chapter BC. Her contributions to the community spanned her lifetime. She volunteered for FISH, organized one of Boise's first Neighborhood Watch groups, and inspired countless individuals as a 37-year survivor of breast cancer; related to that she helped other survivors via Reach to Recovery.

Donna enjoyed socializing, and really knew how to organize fun endeavors. She was member to many card groups over the years, and enjoyed a close group of sewing friends for regular get-togethers.

Donna also served for many years as precinct voting registrar for elections, encouraging people to be active citizens, something that has been passed on and embraced by her family.

Donna loved to camp; she and Bill started taking their girls at a young age, and continued with other couples travelling in groups camping and fishing well into their retirement years. A highlight was when Donna sold her son-in-law, Gary Church, into hiking to the top of Hyndman Peak. At that point Bill had to lead the pack; they said the view was heavenly!

Donna and Bill felt truly blessed with their daughters and their families, and they feel the same way about them. The family and friends of both Donna and Bill will be forever grateful for the tender loving care given them in their later years by their loving granddaughter. She enabled them to enjoy the comfort of home for far longer than they might have been able to without her. What a godsend! We also wish to thank Samaritan Village Society - Boise for the loving care they provided in her last few months.

Donna was preceded in passing by her husband of almost 60 years, Bill, three infant sons, one infant daughter, her parents, and her sisters, Jean Gibson and Mary Lindstrom.

She is survived by daughters and their husbands, Kali and Mark Carringer, Eagle, Idaho, and Lisa and Gary Church, Anchorage, Alaska, grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Memorial services and celebration of life will be held at Hillview United Methodist Church, Sunday, August 31st, at 1:30pm, with private inurement later at Dry Creek Cemetery.
