Joseph Sprigg Chambers was the son of John Chambers (1780-1852) and Hannah Lee Taylor Chambers (1791-1832). Joseph married Martha Ann Phillips (1816-1886) and was the founder and editor of the Maysville Herald Newspaper in 1847.

Joseph Sprigg Chambers was a versatile individual who at diverse times in his life practiced law, taught school, edited a newspaper, farmed, and interested himself in politics. Numbered among his accomplishments the ability to play a violin, and often the neighbors gathered at their house for a dance or social.
