Child Killed Under Auto as Woman Returns From Putting Flowers on Husbands Grave
While skipping across the street and holding tight in his hand a treasured ice cream cone. James Curtis Cate, 5, of 2831 Warren avenue, was struck and fatally injured by an automobile shortly after 6 o'clock Thursday evening at Birmingham and Oakland avenues after he arrived at the Fair park emergency hospital. The child had purchased the cone a monument before the accident and was crossing the street to continue his way homeward. Dr. J.W. Bass who examined him said he was badly crushed, having been injured internally and probably receiving a fractured skull. Mrs. N.G. Connelly, 904 North Bishop avenue, was driving the car. Which hit him, she told the officers. She was returning to her home after having gone to the cemetery to place flowers on the grave of her husband. Who died two years ago. She was almost frantic with grief following the accident.
As the child raced across the street he paid no heed to approaching cars until he suddenly appeared directly in her path, according to her report and the statement of witnesses. There he halted for a moment as he saw the approaching car. He then turned and started back toward the side of the street from whence he had just come. He was struck by one wheel of the car, which witnesses said passed over his body. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. I.H. Cate.
After the loss of a third child Bertha Curtis Cate died within 7 months due to a broken heart.
