Colonel Ward was a self-made man who went to work as a youth of 9, and until illness forced total retirement in recent months, had cried more than 5,000 farm and real estate sales in 59 years on the auction block.
Born in the Clearspring district, he entered the auction business in 1885, quickly becoming one of the most popular and beloved auctioneers in county history. In the first decades of this career, his work was so valued that he cried a sale every day from the first of January until mid-April, finding time meanwhile to train three other successful auctioneers.
Mr. Ward several years ago declared that auctions remain the same today as a half-century ago, even though prices are higher and transportation different.
"I decided I would make good," he once said. I studied human nature, I studied values and I always tried to be fair."
During his political career, he twice was elected to the Board of County Commissioners.
He married his wife, Mrs. Ida Ellen Ward, in October, 1889, and in recent years the couple had lived quietly on his farm near Huyett's Crossroads.
Last surviving member of his family, he was the son of William and Maria (Ballow) Ward. He was a member of the Shanktown Evangelical Church.
Surviving besides Mrs. Ward, are: daughters, Mrs. Nora Kuhn, Clearspring; Mrs. Nannie Fritz, Mercersburg; and Mrs. Mary Miles, Clearspring; sons, Isaac Ward, Huyetts Crossroads; and John Ward, Salisbury, Md; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services Sunday at 2:30 pm at St. Paul's Church, the Revs. Karle Kauffman and J. Wade Huffman officiating. Interment in cemetery adjoining.
