He was born circa 1764, based on his 1847 affidavit under oath in Monroe Co., VA; it's the only record with an age instead of an age range (1761-1770 in his 1830 & 1840 censuses). Until proof is found otherwise, he is believed to be the son of James & Ann Maddy who were deeded land in 1764 in Orange Co., VA. (There's no record of their marriage in that county or counties created from Orange, or Fairfax Co., VA where James was in 1755, but family legend states that Ann's maiden surname was Morris.)
