Mathew's places of birth/death are guestimates by many who research the Maddy families of VA/WV. Most records just have one "t" in his first name, but many family trees have two. He was born circa 1764, based on his 1847 affidavit under oath in Monroe Co., VA; it's the only record with an age instead of an age range (1761-1770 in his 1830 & 1840 censuses). Until proof is found otherwise, he is believed to be the son of James & Ann Maddy who were deeded land in 1764 in Orange Co., VA. (There's no record of their marriage in that county or counties created from Orange, or Fairfax Co., VA where James was in 1755, but family legend states that Ann's maiden surname was Morris.)

Mathew married Judeth Christian on 04 December 1799 in Greenbrier Co., VA (now WV); her first name was probably Judith, spelled phonetically by the minister who performed their marriage; she was also listed as Juda and Judy on records of their children. The true number and names of their children is unknown, but there's a 20-25 year gap in the age of their oldest known child (Nancy, born 1800/01) and their youngest two known children (Elias W. & Eber W., born circa 1820-1826), which indicates that several other children were born in between.

Mathew cannot be found in Monroe Co. in the 1850 census, or in any nearby county, but many Maddy families in Monroe are missing from that census. Since he was quite old in 1847, he may have died there in 1847-1850.
