Services for Agness E. Shires, 87, of Abernathy, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2009, in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Mike O'Donnell officiating. Burial will follow services in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy.
Mrs. Shires died Thursday, August 13, 2009, in Lubbock.
She was born February 17, 1922 in Meeker, Okla. to James and Virgie (Williams) Baker. She married Royse L. Shires on February 20, 1937 in Lubbock. They moved to Abernathy in 1964 from California and owned and operated Shires Automatic Laundry. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and later was employed by Whites Tot Shop in Lubbock.
Mrs. Shires is preceded in death by her husband, Royse, on November 1, 1998; and eight siblings.
She is survived by a son, Garald Shires of Littlerock, Ark.; a daughter, Glenda Jones of Lubbock; a sister, Lena Martin of Abernathy; three grandchildren, Austin Jones of Lubbock, Brent Shires of Conway, Ark, and Melody Schottle of Coppell; and two great-granddaughters.
