David was born in Slater, Missouri. He was the son of James Crawford and Addie (Price) Wheeler. At the age of 19 he was working as a horse trainer in Hutchinson, Kansas. At the age of 41, he married Rena Blanche Gooch in Leavenworth, Kansas. They lived in Kansas City, Missouri. David was switchman for Milwaukee Kansas City Southern Railroad. He died February 22, 1990 at the age of 91.
